Communicating Your Needs at Work

We all know the familiar feeling of getting bogged down while at work, especially if you’re a provider working long 12+ hour shifts multiple times a week. Maybe there’s something that’s been really bothering you, but you aren’t exactly sure how to approach it. You’re frustrated, but don’t want to take it out on your boss or coworkers. Maybe you’re even shy about causing any sort of “problem” at work, but being able to communicate your needs in your job position is a key component of staying happy and satisfied in your role.

How do you know where to start with communicating those needs? These few tips will help you get started.

Create a script

If you’re unsure of what to say or how to say it, create a script you can follow when voicing your concerns. Start by writing down your thoughts and transfer them into a straightforward, objective description of the situation you want to address.

Use “I” statements when communicating:

  • I feel like I haven’t been getting the shifts I need to achieve a healthy work-life balance

  • I want to transfer to a different facility as I think it will better suit my needs

Once you’ve got down what you’d like to say, rehearse a few times so you can feel more confident making your argument.

Pick a good time

Make sure you schedule a one-to-one meeting so you can have your leadership’s undivided attention. Providing a bit of a heads up will allow your supervisor time to prepare for what’s to come, making the meeting more productive.

Keep it professional

Talking about frustrations that have been bottled up can lead to being emotional. While it is completely okay to be vulnerable and show emotion, getting angry or upset while talking can make your time less productive. Take a deep breath and remember to let your employer know what steps need to be taken in order to meet your needs. Finally, be receptive and willing to cooperate as it may take a bit of time for your needs to be met.

We are always looking to take in feedback in order to create a better working environment for you. One that motivates you to show up with a positive attitude to work each day. Whether you’re looking for more flexibility, better pay, or better shifts, let us know and we will always do our best to address and solve your concerns.
