Cross-Training for Nurses

As you continue climbing your career ladder, upskilling is crucial to staying at the top of your career game. There are various cross-training programs that allow nurses like you to do just that.

What is cross-training?

Cross-training provides healthcare providers like you with specific skills designed to deepen your nurse knowledge and skill level, making it easier to fulfill staff shortages.

Hospitals and facilities often offer cross-training programs of a variety of training you may not have experienced during nursing school.

What’s the goal?

The goal of these programs is to deepen knowledge and skills for better patient care. You will learn new skills so you can float to different positions within the same facility.

You will often find these programs are designed for you to fill critical shortages in different departments within the facility you are employed in.

Who’s involved?

Cross-training typically involves you, your supervisor, and your workplace’s training department. In some cases, it may also include your employer (like RealogicHR). If you’re interested in cross-training, you will likely have to bring it up to your supervisor to formulate a plan.

The Benefits?

  • Increased Marketability: The more skills you have, the better your resume looks. While specialties are great, having a wide variety of skills will stand out when searching for a new position

  • Flexibility: More skills mean a wider variety of shift options. If you can serve multiple areas, your shift options will open up

  • Knowledge: Knowledge is power, and you must continue to learn beyond CEUs. Staying up with the latest information is a good way to maintain your relevance

Continuing your education throughout your nursing career is crucial to providing the best patient care and staying up to date with the industry. Cross-training can provide broader knowledge beyond traditional CEU classes that typically have a narrower focus.
